The Toronto Star’s Richard Griffin reported Sunday that the Jays should “not yet be discounted in the chase for the 30-year-old free agent left fielder. Griffin reports that Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos set a price tag on Cabrera and that a lack of interest could potentially make the Jays’ offer to Cabrera the best once the market settles. Toronto submitted a $15.3 million qualifying offer to Cabrera, which he rejected earlier this month. However, they are believed to have tabled a multi-year offer that stands while Cabrera tests free agent waters. Cabrera is looking to cash in on a solid season with the Jays after spending the last two years in Toronto on a relatively cheap $16 million (total) deal. Despite finishing the 2012 seasson with a .dddddddddddd346 average and earning the All-Star Game MVP Award, Cabrera was seen as a risky investment prior to 2013 due to serving a 50-game suspension for performance-enhancing drugs to conclude the campaign. The Jays snapped him up at $8 million per, and - after an injury-shortened 2013 – saw excellent production out of the Dominican. Cabrera hit .301 (ninth in the American League) with the Jays in 2014 and was just four shy of the team lead with 171 hits, despite missing 33 games to injury. He hit 16 home runs and drove in 73. A 10-year MLB veteran, Cabrera has a career slash line of .286/.339/.415. He has appeared in 1211 games with the Blue Jays, New York Yankees, Atlanta Braves, Kansas City Royals and San Francisco Giants. He has hit 88 career home runs and 520 RBI. ' ' '
